Overview of Merchant Branded Gift Cards
What is a Merchant Gift Card?
A merchant gift card is a prepaid card issued by a specific retailer or service provider, designed for use exclusively at that merchant's locations or online platforms. These cards, often referred to as closed-loop gift cards, are not interchangeable between different companies but are tailored for spending at one specific brand or store.
How Do Merchant Gift Cards Work?
When you purchase or receive a merchant gift card, it comes loaded with a certain monetary value. You can then use this card to make purchases up to that amount within the merchant's network. For example, an Amazon Gift Card can only be used for purchases on Amazon, while a Starbucks card is valid only at Starbucks outlets. The card might be physical, with a magnetic stripe or chip, or digital, where a code is used for transactions.
Types of Merchant Gift Cards
- Physical Cards: Traditional plastic cards that you can hand over or swipe at checkout.
- E-Gift Cards: Digital versions sent via email or text, which are instantly available for use.
- Printable Gift Cards: A code or card design you can print at home for gifting.
